We are incredibly excited to welcome Michael Macdonnell as our Chief Strategy & Growth Officer and Deputy CEO. Macdonnell’s priorities as Deputy CEO will focus on building a scaled technology-enabled Proactive Care Service capable of keeping people well, preventing unnecessary admissions and taking pressure off health service services and staff.
Doccla Deputy CEO Michael Macdonnell: “The prevailing model of healthcare needs to change: more preventative, more proactive and relying less on hard-pressed hospital services. Fortunately, AI is delivering the tools to predict those patients who need enhanced care, to provide clinicians with the intelligence to intervene early and to systematically close gaps in care. Doccla is now delivering AI-powered proactive care across the NHS, combining our team of doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals with our Proactive Care Platform – and working hand-in-glove with local services. In my new role, I am determined to bring this innovative service to tens of thousands of patients across the NHS and other European systems.”
Macdonnell has spent over 20 years at the forefront of public services and health system delivery, including time in Downing Street under Tony Blair implementing domestic policy priorities and national director-level positions at NHS England. Macdonnell also brings deep technology experience, having worked at Google DeepMind on AI healthcare applications, as well as leading global innovation and strategy for UnitedHealth Group.
Alongside his duties at Doccla, Macdonnell will continue as a Non-Executive Director at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, where he chairs the Finance and Performance Committee. Macdonnell joined Doccla last year as a senior adviser, focusing on growth and the company’s transition to providing AI-native proactive care solutions.

In addition, we are delighted to welcome Dr. Jonathan Serjeant as our Global Chief Medical Officer at Doccla. Incoming CMO Dr Serjeant will focus on the disciplined, safe expansion of virtual care. As Global CMO, Dr Serjeant will bridge the gap between entrepreneurial drive and clinical integrity. He will work directly with ICBs and hospital boards to demonstrate how Doccla’s virtual hospital model can absorb risk and deliver high-quality, population-level health outcomes at-scale.
Doccla Global Chief Medical Officer Dr Jonathan Serjeant: "The challenge ahead is vital to the health of our populations, but success is only possible if we work as a true partner within the healthcare ecosystem. Doccla brings the focus, resource, and rapid evolution required to let new models of care emerge. Our foundation is built on grounded evidence and previous experience, but our future is one of co-creation with our partners. Ultimately, success means fewer people suffering the trauma of a hospital admission when it could have been avoided.
By becoming a trusted, integrated member of the healthcare ecosystem, we have a genuine chance to keep people well in the place they feel safest - their own homes - while giving our frontline colleagues the breathing room they desperately need."
A Sussex-based GP with 25 years of experience, Dr Serjeant joins Doccla to lead a clinical strategy that prioritises systemic partnership over isolated innovation. His career - marked by the founding of NHSCollaborate, Care Unbound (Here), Medical Imaging Partnership - has been dedicated to creating healthcare models that work for both clinicians and the communities they serve.

These appointments mark an exciting new chapter for Doccla. With Michael’s strategic and operational leadership and Jonathan’s clinical expertise, we’re more confident than ever in our ability to transform healthcare through innovative, AI-powered solutions.
